The FT-004 will do intonation, August 28, 2012

Several posts say the Fender will not do intonation…. Well I have one of these tuners. My intonation was off on my Gibson Les Paul Custom, so I used the FT-004 to tune the intonation. I had to go slow, but if it shows flat, it’s flat, shorten the string a little, and finally I got the green “in tune” status. Did this for all six strings. The accuracy is +/- 1 cent, so being the perfectionist I am, I ordered a Peterson SC-1… ($75.00) I put the Peterson on expecting to see a little off on the intonation. After all Peterson is 10 times more accurate right? (+/- 0.1 cent)….
Well every string was dead on according to the Peterson, the strobe didn’t move one segment. So I wasted $75 bucks. If you know what you are doing, the physics of intonation and simply take your time, this little turner will do intonation. With an accuracy of +/- 1 cent it works just as good as a Peterson for a lot less. Take your time, if the Fender says it is flat, just keep slowly shortening the string until you get the green “on pitch” light. (lengthen the string if it’s sharp)
As for regular tuning… can’t beat this little guy. I use mine on chromatic all the time, but there is also a guitar setting for strings 6 through 1 which is great for those just wanting to tune up. Great little tuner!

This is the one I’d throw in the guitar case. The mount is solid, it folds into a very compact package ( you could
probably fold it and leave it clipped to your headstock when you put it in the case ) and the single button control is
very easy to use. The display is bright, the tuning indicator “needle” moves in 10 cent increments, (-50 to 0 to +50)
and turns from blue to green when it reaches pitch. This is great for regular tuning, but a little too coarse for fine
work like adjusting the guitar’s intonation. Had they made it -40 to -10, -5, 0, +5, +10 to +40 this would be the perfect
tuner IMHO. As it is, it’s 92% perfect and well worth having.
