Andy Samberg Talks About Hosting Style Ahead Of Primetime Emmy

With just a few days to go before he hosts the Primetime Emmy Awards, comedian and actor Andy Samberg is promising to “keep it light, silly and fun” when he takes to the stage on Sunday for the biggest night in TV.

The 37 year old ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ star told E! News at Wednesday’s preview night (September 16th) that preparations were almost complete for the ceremony, and that he wasn’t feeling too nervous. “I’m feeling really good, man, it’s going well,” he said. “We’re writing up a storm and we have shot a couple of pre-tapes, so we’re editing and I feel good about it all.”

When asked what he thought he could get away with in terms of button-pushing and jokes, he replied: “Less than on ‘Saturday Night Live’ and probably about the same as on ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’.”

However, Samberg kept schtum on the identities of guest stars, though of course he admitted there would be guests. “I mean there’s so many funny comedy people that are going to be there just because they are nominated – so, yeah, we’re definitely going to be incorporating a lot of funny people and make it a big family party.”

Samberg knows that one of the main threats that can de-rail an awards ceremony is that there are eventually more losers than winners in the audience. “Award shows can feel really tense with a lot of nervous nominees,” he said to People. “As the show goes on, there are more and more people in the audience who didn’t win.”

As far as he’s concerned, Golden Globes hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are the gold standard when it comes to presenting awards ceremonies, but reckons that’s partially because drinks are allowed at that evening. They are not, however, permitted in the audience at the Emmys, which Samberg believes makes things more difficult.

“For a show that has the running time of the Emmys, you’d think they’d give people drinks. Although, that’s enough time for people to get really hammered. So, in a way, it could be a blessing that they don’t. There could be fights,” he laughed. “Maybe I’ll see about piping oxygen into the room like they do at casinos.”

The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards show takes place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday September 20th, and is broadcast live on Fox.
