Deutch reveals the co-stars were huddled together to keep warm during a break in filming, when a facial expression from the movie veteran prompted the 21-year-old to look behind her – and spot the hazard before it was too late.
“It was such an amazing experience,” the Ringer star said of working with De Niro.
“Everytime I think of him though, I have this funny image of him that pops in my head,” she laughed to U.S. breakfast show Today. “We were waiting for the shot to be set up and it was pouring rain – hailing, actually – so cold, huddling next to this heater, sharing a bag of cool ranch Doritos (chips). So we’re sharing this bag of cool ranch Doritos and I’m distracted by the situation at hand, and he kind of like, raises his eyebrows at me, and I’m like, ‘What’s going on Bob?’ and I look back and my coat had caught on fire!”
Deutch didn’t go into detail about exactly how the garment had set alight, or how the flames had been put out, but she claims, “The man saved my life. I wouldn’t have known… so that was just the beginning of a series of many embarrassing events with De Niro!”
Deutch wasn’t the only young Dirty Grandpa star to be left red faced in the presence of De Niro – Julianne Hough also recently confessed to flubbing an attempt to impress the Raging Bull icon.
“I was very nervous to meet him; he’s Robert De Niro!” she exclaimed to U.S. breakfast show Good Morning America on Monday (18Jan16). “I was like, I have to act cool and know what I’m talking about, so I needed to go talk to him and I had no idea what I was going to say, but I’m like, ‘Do you like clementines?’ He’s like, ‘Not really.’ I’m like, ‘All right, see you later!'”
