BREAKING: Well Go USA Entertainment will release the Fan Bingbing-starring I Am Not Madame Bovary after it releases first in China on Sept. 3oth. The company committed to handling distribution in North America after Thursday evening’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The drama, from filmmaker Xiaogang Feng’s (Aftershock) also stars Guo Tao (The Dead End) and Da Peng (Jian Bing Man), is based on Liu Zhenyun’s 2012 novel I Did Not Kill My Husband. The film, also adapted by Zhenyun, tells the satirical story of a village woman (Bingbing) accused of being an adulterer. After a ruling is made against her in her divorce case, she begins an annual ‘journey of petition’ to Beijing in order to prove that her divorce was a sham, and to redeem her reputation.

Well Go USA Entertainment’s President & CEO Doris Pfardrescher said, in making the announcement, that he thought the film would translate well stateside. The film is presented by Sparkle Roll Media Corporation, Huayi Brothers Media Corporation, Beijing Skywheel Entertainment, Huayi Brothers Pictures and Zhejiang Dongyang Mayla Media with Qi Jianhong, Wang Zhongjun, Song Ge, Wang Zhonglei and Feng Xiaigang.

The executive associate producer is Du Yang and associate producers are T.K. Yang, Randy Liu, Sunny Sun and Hu Xiaofeng. The film is produced by Zhang Dajun; executive produced by Wang Zhonglei, Zhou Maofei, Zhao Lei and Jerry Ye; and co-produced by Wang Yang, Joe Tam and Hu Xiaofeng.

The deal was negotiated by Well Go USA Entertainment’s Pfardrescher and Golden Network’s Clarence Tang, who is spearheading Asian sales, along with CAA on behalf of the filmmakers. Wild Bunch is handling Europe.

Well Go USA Entertainment’s corporate headquarters is in Dallas, Texas, with offices in New York, Taiwan, and China. Their recent releases include Hong-jin Na’s The Wailing, Sang-ho Yeon’s Train to Busan, Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s The Assassin and Wilson Yip’s IP Man 3.
