That horrible news from earlier this afternoon really seems to be true.
At the very end of tonight’s Daily Show, Jon Stewart himself confirmed his retirement and then brought out the tears as he explained his departure.
“It’s time for someone else to have that opportunity,” he said towards the end of the episode after explaining how Comedy Central’s Doug Herzog and Michele Ganeless gave him the chance to helm the Daily Show franchise 17 years ago.
With that, gasps and a few cries rang out through the audience, who had no idea this announcement was about to take place.
Stewart still didn’t give us an exact date for his retirement, but he did say that it could be September, when his contract is up, or maybe sometime in December, meaning that it looks like we’ll have to navigate the 2016 election without our usual voice of reason.
He also said that he currently has no plans as to what he’ll do next, but his decision to leave has more to do with the fact that it’s just time to go.
“I’m not going anywhere tomorrow, but this show doesn’t deserve an even slightly restless host, and neither do you,” he said.
He also joked: “I’m gonna have dinner on a school night with my family, who I have heard, from multiple sources, are lovely people.”
Watch the video above for the whole announcement and feel free to cry like an absolute baby. We know we did.
