How did you react when Adele dropped her video for ‘Hello’ on Friday? Did you watch it on repeat, cry tears of joy or maybe just make a meme that ended up going viral? The video, which has so far had over 25 million views a day, has also become one of the most meme-d clips of the year so far, thanks to an old fashioned phone and some dodgy tea making skills.
In the video Adele, the multi-multi millionaire, is seen using a very retro looking flip phone to call her former love. But thanks to the internet, the phone has become the video’s breakout star, with fans creating many a meme, as they wonder, why does Adele still have such a rubbish phone?

One fan, who clearly knew their Adele history, even managed to find a throwback picture of the star using a flip phone, proving that she’s always loved the retro device. But as for why a flip phone was chosen, video director Xavier Dolan told the LA Times, “I could see the GIFs on Twitter. I’m like, ‘guys, get over it. It doesn’t matter.”
“But the real explanation is that I never like filming modern phones or cars. They’re so implanted in our lives that when you see them in movies you’re reminded you’re in reality. If you see an iPhone or a Toyota in a movie, they’re anti-narrative, they take you out of the story. If I put an iPhone or a modern car in a movie it feels like I’m making a commercial.” the director added.
Another element of the video which caused some online discussion was the scene in which Adele makes a cup of tea. The singer is shown putting her tea bag in the cup after the hot water! Yes, it seems Adele has some funny ideas when it comes to making a good cup of tea.
Of course it was only going to be a matter of time before someone took it upon themselves to make an Adele/Lionel Richie mash-up. Richie’s 1984 hit ‘Hello’ has provided plenty of unintentional comedy over the years, so an Adele/ Lionel phone call was what we were all secretly waiting for.

In the mash-up video Adele is shown answering her phone, but when she hears it’s Lionel on the other end saying ‘hello’ she quickly hangs up. Speaking on Nick Grimshaw BBC Radio 1’s Breakfast Show on Friday, Adele joked about the similarities between her and Lionel’s songs.
“We’ve definitely got to do something, me and Lionel,” Adele said, before suggesting they hold a competitive “hello-off”. ‘Hello’ will appear on Adele’s long awaited third album, 25 which is due to be released on November 20th.
