2ND UPDATE: The man behind the Merc with a Mouth, Ryan Reynolds, had this to say on Twitter about Josh Brolin playing both sides of the Marvel spectrum in both the Deadpool movies and Disney’s Avengers movies.
1ST UPDATE: Josh Brolin is adding another character from the Marvel universe to his filmography, that of the telepathic Cable, son of X-Men’s Cyclops, in 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool 2. The Oscar-nominated Milk actor already plays the villain Thanos in the Disney/Marvel canon and will reprise that role in Avengers: Infinity War in 2018.
Brolin join star Ryan Reynolds and Zazie Beetz, who is playing Domino, in the sequel that’s being directed by David Leitch. Michael Shannon reportedly was the front-runner for the role. Brolin is committed to Fox for a four-pic run.
Cable first appeared as an infant in the 1986 Uncanny X-Men series. His adult identity was created by writer Louise Simonson and artist/co-writer Rob Liefeld, with Cable first appearing in the March 1990 edition of The New Mutants. Cable later was paired with Deadpool in a 2004 comic-book series.
Brolin is repped by CAA and Ziffren Brittenham. THR first reported the casting.
