Reese Witherspoon Joins Oscars Debate And Calls For More

As the debate over the lack of diversity among this year’s Oscar nominations continues, Reese Witherspoon has become the latest star to speak out. On Thursday the actress shared a Time magazine article about the Academy’s problem with diversity on her Facebook page and added that she would like to see ‘more diverse voting membership’.

‘I really appreciated this article in TIME on the lack of racial and gender diversity in this year’s Oscar nominations,’ Witherspoon, who herself is an Academy member wrote. ‘So disappointed that some of 2015’s best films, filmmakers and performances were not recognized.’

‘Nothing can diminish the quality of their work, but these filmmakers deserve recognition. As an Academy member, I would love to see a more diverse voting membership.’ Witherspoon has been nominated in The Oscars’ Best Actress category twice, winning in 2006 for Walk the Line.

All week Hollywood stars have been speaking out about the awards’ lack of diversity, with director Spike Lee and actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith confirming they would be boycotting this year’s ceremony.

Academy member George Clooney also spoke out about the issue, telling Variety that the Oscars were ‘moving in the wrong direction’. ‘We should have been paying attention long before this. I think that African-Americans have a real fair point that the industry isn’t representing them well enough. I think that’s absolutely true,’ Clooney said.

‘Let’s look back at some of the nominees. I think around 2004, certainly there were black nominees — like Don Cheadle, Morgan Freeman. And all of a sudden, you feel like we’re moving in the wrong direction. There were nominations left off the table.’

‘There were four films this year … Creed could have gotten nominations. Concussion could have gotten Will Smith a nomination; Idris Elba could have been nominated for Beasts of No Nation and Straight Outta Compton could have been nominated,’ he added. ‘And certainly last year, with Selma director Ava DuVernay. I think that it’s just ridiculous not to nominate her.’
