Michael Douglas has spoken about his marriage and his health as he stepped out with his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, at the AARP Awards on Monday night in Beverly Hills.
Coming just a day after some onlookers spotted Douglas, 71, at the Super Bowl in Santa Clara looking somewhat frail, Douglas and Zeta-Jones attended the 15th annual AARP Movies for Grownups Awards. He said that his marriage was going strong once more, after he and his wife briefly separated back in 2013.
“I think it’s just moment to moment,” the Hollywood heavyweight told reporters. “Catherine reminds me, I like to say sometimes, we all make more efforts to strangers than we do to the people closest to us.”

Douglas was honoured with a career achievement award at the event. He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2010, but was declared to be in remission in January 2011, and said that his health had now become one of his top priorities and thanked his wife for playing a huge part in that.

“I think love, without getting too corny, nourishing each other, working at relationships, good sustenance, good food, good kids, all kind of a combination,” he said. The couple recently celebrated their 15th anniversary together.
“I’m cancer-free and five years out. And that normally means that everything’s over. Health becomes a priority,” he said. “Working out well, you’re watching your diet. Watching how much you drink, that kind of stuff.”
He also joked that the 25 year age difference between him and his wife might help keep him fit. Zeta-Jones, 46, said “he’s a good commercial for AARP because he’s fit in mind, body, and soul. And I think that’s longevity, right there.”
