McDonald’s: Minions Happy Meal Toys Are Not Swearing At

McDonald’s is adamant those Minions Happy Meal toys aren’t really swearing at children. Controversy arose this week when parents shared videos of their children’s Happy Meal toys seemingly saying ‘what the f**k. Some of the videos, uploaded on YouTube, have been watched millions of times. However, McDonald’s has no intention of recalling the toys despite widespread distaste and a number of complaints.

McDonald’s began receiving complaints from parents shortly after the movie promotional toy was released at the beginning of July, according to reports in the BBC. Although there are a range of different Minions characters to collect, it is the caveman minion which is under scrutiny. 

McDonald’s claims the toy only makes three noises and none of them are even remotely obscene. The toy reportedly says “para la bukay,” “hahaha” and “eh eh.” However, debate continues despite their statement released on Friday (10th July). 

“Our goal at McDonald’s is to serve up food and fun for our valued customers, and we’re glad to have the Minions on board,” a spokesperson for McDonald’s said in a statement.

They also stated they had only received a “small number” of complaints and they had no intention of recalling the toy which will continue to be available in McDonald’s worldwide until the end of this month. 

Minions is the spin-off from the hugely popular Despicable Me movies. It is out in cinemas now and follows the Minions’ journey through time as they continually search for an appropriately ambitious overlord. They eventually encounter Scarlet Overkill and chaos ensues when they are recruited to steal the British Crown Jewels. 

Pierre Coffin, Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney and Steve Coogan have all lent their voices to the animated film.
