L’Wren Scott’s Sister: Mick Jagger

L’Wren Scott’s sister has claimed the funeral of the late fashion designer was “hijacked” by Mick Jagger and turned into a “media circus”. The funeral, which took place on Monday (24th March), was attended by numerous celebrities but few of Scott’s relatives.

Jan Shane, Scott’s adopted sister, was allegedly left out of the loop when it came to planning the funeral. Shane wanted her sister buried in Utah, close to their childhood home, but Jagger allegedly insisted his partner of 13 years be buried in Los Angeles. However, further Shane further claims she was not even invited to the funeral and only one of Scott’s family members – her brother Randall- attended the ceremony at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles. According to reports, Shane and Randall have not been on speaking terms since 2008 when they argued about their mother’s family arrangements. As a result Randall – not Jagger – requested Shane not attend the funeral.

Scott’s final resting place has also become an issue for Shane. On the subject Shane, as the Daily Mail reports, said Scott “has been away from home for so long, this is her place, not in some strange cemetery in Los Angeles. It has no connection, but it’s Mick and his kids that are making all the decisions.”

Scott was brought up a Mormon and it is traditional for the body to be laid out for family members to say goodbye before burial. Scott was cremated and this is just one of the reasons Shane is claiming 70-year-old Jagger failed to consider the family wishes. Shane claims that, although Scott wished to be cremated, it has made it “more difficult to say goodbye”.

Shane also believes the funeral was not a dignified occasion and failed to treat Scott as a “human being”. Shane said “I hate to believe that it’s become a showbiz, fake funeral – she deserves more. She’s a human being, she made a life that was hers, not his [Jagger’s]. She deserves to be remembered for herself”.  Scott’s funeral and wake was attended by over 70 guests including a number of celebrities. Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban and Dave Stewart were amongst the most notable names.

Of course the irony is palpable. Shane is speaking to numerous media outlets and publically airing her grievances, merely adding to the frenzy of the ‘media circus’. Meanwhile Jagger remains silent. There appears to be a sense of possession in Shane’s arguments, throughout the interview she constantly referred to the attention on Jagger and claimed that, despite their 13 year relationship, family was a more important factor in arranging such events. On the matter, Shane said “he hijacked this funeral. Yes, he was with her for 13 years, but family is family, that’s what it boils down to”.

The funeral is not the only point of contention between Scott’s family and Jagger as Scott’s will was read earlier this week and published yesterday (27th March). Scott left her entire estate to Jagger with no bequests left to her family. It appears not to be the financial gain Shane is concerned about regarding the will but Scott’s possessions including a number of sentimental items belonging to their mother. Shane and other members of the Scott family plan to contest the will.
