Lena Dunham has been out on the campaign trail on behalf of Hillary Clinton, rallying support as she pushes for the Democratic candidate nomination. The creator of HBO’s ‘Girls’ spoke to crowds of Clinton’s supporters in Iowa on Saturday, urging more women to get involved in politics.
“Nothing gets me angrier than when someone implies I’m voting for Hillary Clinton simply because she’s female,” Dunham said to supporters in Iowa. “[It’s] as if I have some feminist version of beer-goggles, lets call it ‘estrogen blindness’, and I just kind of walk like a zombie towards the nearest vagina.”

“This assumption is condescending at best and it is sharply misogynistic at worst.” The actress and writer added that she was supporting Clinton “because of her policies, because of her track record, because of her beliefs – and a little bit because of her pantsuits. But that’s my prerogative as a citizen.”
Dunham also admitted that it had taken her four years to exercise her right to vote and encouraged young women to get involved in politics early. “I’m embarrassed to say this but it took me far too long to start voting,” she said. “I had been of legal age for more than four years before I cast my first vote in the 2008 presidential election.”
“It’s not that I didn’t care, but I didn’t believe that me caring mattered. It was impossible for me to comprehend that one young woman checking a box after waiting in a long line could matter on a national level.”

Dunham also spent the weekend in charge of Clinton’s Instagram account. Her first post showed the 29-year-old wearing a blue, red and white striped dress and was captioned: ‘Hey y’all! I made it to New Hampshire and I’m thrilled to be taking over the HRC Instagram! Warning: I’m pretty focused on my outfits. #Imwithher -Lena.’
