Things went horribly wrong at the Jose Canseco household today.

The former Major League Baseball player accidentally shot himself in the hand while cleaning out his handgun at his Las Vegas home this afternoon, according to NBC News.

“It was a serious hand injury,” Las Vegas Metro Police Lt. Mark Reddon said of the 2:30 p.m. accident, which damaged one of the fingers on Canseco’s left hand. “There was nothing suspicious. There was no alcohol involved, just a misstep with a handgun,” Reddon said.

Canseco’s fiancée Leila Knight told Los Angeles Times that he didn’t know the gun was loaded, and the shot ripped through his middle finger. Ouch!

Knight added that the 50-year-old is currently in surgery as doctors desperately try to save what’s left of his finger. Unfortunately, according to Knight, doctors have already said he’ll never have full use of that finger again.

“I heard the gun go off and saw his middle finger hanging by a string,” she said. “It will either have to be amputated or have full reconstruction surgery.”

The right-handed outfielder and designated hitter—who played for Texas, Boston, Toronto, Tampa Bay and the New York Yankees—had 462 career home runs and was a six-time All-Star.

Canseco later admitted to performance-enhancing drug use in his 2005 book Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant ‘Roids, Smash Hits & How Baseball Got Big.
