Jake Gyllenhaal had no idea what he got himself into when he made a guest appearance on Ellen DeGeneres‘ talk show.
The actor was busy promoting his upcoming flick, Nightcrawler, when he got completely caught off guard by the comedian’s tricks!
In honor of the flick’s release date on Halloween, DeGeneres thought it would be hilarious to give the hunky actor the fright of his life during his interview—and she was right.
“I just want you to do comedy at some point, because, Jarhead, Prisoners, which was fantastic—every movie you’re in is just so intense,” DeGeneres started out by saying.
“What is it about the dark movies that you do?”

Gyllenhaal replied, “I have this belief that if you kind of go into the dark sometimes, it can be illuminating.”
Unaware of what was about to hit him, he continued, “I like those characters [because] they’re kind of fun to play, but I also think there’s an opportunity for…”
And then it happened. A person dressed in a terrifying doll/clown costume popped out right in between DeGeneres and Gyllenhaal and he flipped the f–ck out. Literally.
The 33-year-old actor was jolted and dropped an F-bomb after the on-air scare.
