The Whiplash star will play Watertown Police Department Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese, who was one of the officers who engaged in a firefight with brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev after the 2013 attack, which cost three people their lives and left 264 others injured during the famous Boston Marathon.
Director Peter Berg explains he chose Simmons for the role because he is confident he will handle the part respectfully.
“Beyond his considerable talents, J.K. Simmons is a person who respects the solemn trust that these real-life heroes are putting in our hands,” reads a statement from Berg. “This is an actor who will represent the role in the best way possible.”
Wahlberg, who is also a producer on the movie, will take on the lead role as a Boston Police Department officer.
The film is based on the account of Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis. Production is slated to begin in Boston next month (Mar16).
Two rival movies about the Boston bombings are also in development – Jake Gyllenhaal has been cast in the lead role as one of the survivors in Stronger, while Fox executives are also working on Boston Strong.
