Fifteen years have now passed since the horrific September 11 terrorist attacks that killed 2,996 people in 2001, but for many the memory feels as fresh as it did on that awful day. No doubt most of you reading this can recall with eerie clarity just where you were and what you were doing on that day, and if so you share that in common with millions. With the milestone’s arrival, a torrent of tributes have poured in on social media marking the occasion including in the entertainment industry. Whether to commemorate the victims and first responders, or simply to say the day will never be forgotten, stars and celebrities, particularly those with strong connections to New York City, weighed in.
Among them, SNL cast member Pete Davidson, whose father was a New York City Firefighter killed during the post-attack rescue efforts. Davidson has long been open about the loss, and has even mined it for particularly effective comedy. Today, Davidson marked the day with a series of hilarious and heartbreaking posts to his Instagram account, including a photo from his childhood, and a bittersweet joke at the expense of his father’s taste in footwear.
Others weighed in as well, including Oprah, Lady Gaga, and more.
Last but not least, naturally the major Presidential candidates each weighed in, with Donald Trump posting an uncharacteristically lengthy note to his Facebook and Hillary Clinton, who attended a memorial service today despite fighting a bout with pneumonia.
