“Furious 7” Goes for Victory Lap after $1 Billion

Guess who’s at the top of the box office this week? That was a rhetorical question, because obviously it was Furious 7. Again. The conclusion (maybe) of the now iconic action franchise is already past the billion mark and has earned $ 29 million domestically this past weekend, according to USA Today’s estimates.

Furious 7
This weekend, Furious 7 broke records.

Domestically, Furious 7 is at $ 294.7 million and reached the billion mark on Friday, after just 17 days out in theatres. This beats the previous 19-day record, set by The Avengers and Avatar. But Furious 7 had one big advantage.

“Furious 7 is a global phenomenon that made hitting the billion-dollar mark look easy,” says Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst for Rentrak. “Audiences have a true emotional connection to this movie and a big part of that is support for Paul Walker. But this film is also the true popcorn film experience. This is why people go to the theater to take a ride like this.”

As per formula, the second biggest grosser of the weekend was a comedy, Paul Blart 2: Mall Cop. The follow-up to the 2009 surprise hit Paul Blart: Mall Cop, starring Kevin James as a Segway-riding security officer, absolutely bombed with the critics, “earning” just 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. It fared much better on the sales front, reaching $ 29 million over its first weekend of release.
