Emilia Clarke: ‘I Knew About Jon Snow’s

The actress, who plays dragon queen Daenerys Targaryen in the hit fantasy show, revealed she was fooled by Kit’s deception when he initially told her his character, who was stabbed to death at the end of season five last year (15), would not be returning.

“I read the script and called Kit immediately,” she told Digital Spy. “He was like, ‘It’s real. It’s happening.’ And I was totally heartbroken.”

Emilia kept pushing Kit to reveal further details about his character’s fate, as fan theories swirled on social media suggesting Jon Snow would be brought back to life by sorcerer Melisandre, a Red Priestess.

“Then I went out to supper with Kit in January, and we had finished filming in December – but I said to him, ‘What did they (show executives) get you as the wrap gift?’

“They are really good at wrap gifts on the show and Kit’s been in it forever, so obviously it’s going to be a really good one – but he just said to me, ‘Oh, no… They didn’t get me anything…’.

“I went, ‘What now? They didn’t get you a wrap gift?’ And then I gave him a glass of wine and he told me everything!” she laughed.

The actress is currently promoting romantic drama Me Before You, in which she stars alongside Sam Claflin. Based on Jojo Moyes’ bestselling book, it follows the story of a young woman who becomes a carer for a wealthy former banker who was left paralysed after a road accident.

Emilia admits she is drawn to playing strong female characters and she is grateful to bosses on both projects for giving her such material to work with.

“It’s wonderful. I feel like Game of Thrones has a broad range of strong women – and we keep seeing them getting stronger and stronger,” she said.

“With Me Before You, (my character) Lou is actually an incredibly strong, strong girl in her own way and in a much more tangible, real way. The director of the movie, Thea Sharrock, is a woman and the writer, Jojo Moyes, is a woman – and there was a lot of female heads of department, so it was a terribly feminine set. And then we had Sam Claflin!” she joked.
