“We started working on the film with songs from Ellie Goulding’s album Halcyon and soon found that the texture of her music and the tone of her voice matched perfectly with our film,” director Neil Burger said, via Digital Spy. “In many ways Ellie has become the inner voice of our heroine Tris.”

In addition to Ellie’s standalone track, the pop star will also contribute vocals to the film’s score, which has been composed by electronic artist Junkie XL and Hans Zimmer (‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘Inception’). DJ Zedd has also contributed a track called ‘Find You’ which features Matthew Koma and Miriam Bryant.

The 27 year-old ‘Burn’ singer revealed to MTV that she’d been recording with a full orchestra: “I was recording with an orchestra for ‘Divergent,’ and my voice is kind of woven into the instrumental bits of the soundtrack,” she explained. “So, like, I basically got to go into the studio, and just be put in front of the microphone for a few hours and sing whatever I wanted to sing. Not even words, noises and sounds, too. I listened to a lot of Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard, that kind of stuff.”

The film, which is set to be one of three in line with author Veronica Roth’s novels, stars Woodley as Tris, an extraordinary teenager who finds out that she’s not like anyone else because she’s Divergent, meaning she doesn’t fit into any of the five pre-ordained factions the rest of the populace fit into.

However, rather than being treasured by society for her individual traits, Tris becomes under danger of extermination as an authoritarian leader seeks to rid the world of her kind in order to assert total dominance.

In an interview, Roth explained her inspiration for the books, saying “At some point in everybody’s life you have to decide if you’re gonna stick with the way you were raised or listen to your own internal compass.”

Divergent will be released on the 21st March in the US and on the 4th April in the UK. The Divergent motion picture soundtrack will be released on the 11th March.
