Don’t Worry, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Chloe Bennet

Warning: The following contains spoilers from tonight’s game-changing episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. If you haven’t tuned in yet, you may want to turn away. Consider yourselves warned.

Did that really just happen? We can’t believe our eyes, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans.

After promising us that one of Daisy’s Secret Warriors couldn’t be trusted, the final moments of tonight’s mind-blowing episode revealed that the traitor under Hive’s control was none other than Daisy herself (Chloe Bennet). It was a shocking reveal that meant that the pious would-be leader of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Inhuman division, in order, framed her boyfriend Lincoln (Luke Mitchell) for her treachery, killed Malick (Powers Boothe) before he could reveal anymore about her treachery, and then shook the entire compound down around her former team as she triumphantly sauntered on her way to Hive (Brett Dalton).

As we tried to catch our breath, we got Bennet on the phone to break down all the madness we’d just seen. Turns out she was just as stunned as we were.

“Oh my god, it’s just the beginning. It’s just the beginning! I know even more information now and it’s even worse,” she said. “Yeah, Daisy framed Lincoln, killed Malick, and here we are. And now she’s under the sway of Hive, the most powerful Inhuman. I think people will have a weird reaction. It’s like SkyeWard ‘shippers will be like, ‘Oh, this is weird! But do I even want this?'” We think it’s safe to say that anyone still hoping to see Skye (now Daisy) and Ward (now dead and under Hive’s parasitic control) back together, this was not how they envisioned it.

“I think people are going to have very strange reactions,” she continued. “After [tonight’s episode,] nothing will ever be the same for the rest of the series. I can just tell you that.”

When Bennet first got word of what Daisy was in for, her initial reaction wasn’t exactly a positive one. “Honestly, my first reaction was—I was kind of pissed. I was like, ‘What?!’ If I’m going to be completely honest, I was very defensive of Daisy,” she admitted. “We play these characters for 10 months out of the year for 22 hours. You become really defensive of these people that you’re playing. They really had to explain, ‘No, it’s not you. You’re under a sway.’ It took a lot of explaining to understand what that meant.”

So, what does it mean, exactly? Allow Bennet to explain: “I am under the drug of Hive, essentially, and I’ve basically been drugged. But I am still me. So, I have the ruthlessness, I have the fierceness, I have the power of Daisy, but something has changed where now my intentions and my motives behind what I believe and what I want are completely different. It’s giving me this euphoric feeling of being under drugs because I’m essentially under a drug. That was difficult for me to play.”

Daisy falling under Hive’s sway isn’t only a very personal problem for the hero, but it certainly can’t help how Coulson (Clark Gregg) and the rest of the humans of S.H.I.E.L.D. view all Inhumans. “It was kind of a bummer,” Bennet said of the setback. “We were like, ‘Oh my god, she finally got her team together and we proved that Inhumans are really useful!’ And nope, just kidding! This is awkward! It was a huge step for Inhumans, which is frustrating, but I don’t think that will necessarily—I think their main concern is going to be really to get Daisy back and find a way for her to come back out of sway.”

In next week’s episode, Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) will try and follow a lead to stop Hive, but Bennet warned, “Obviously, things don’t always go as planned.”

So, is there a legitimate fear among the team that Daisy may be beyond rescue? Bennet remains hopeful. “I think if we can bring Coulson back from the dead, they can figure out a way to get Daisy out of sway,” she admitted, before tempering that hope. “But it’s questionable.”

Looking ahead to the remainder of the season, Bennet made it clear that the devastation S.H.I.E.L.D. plans to deliver in season three is just getting started. “We’re shooting the finale right now. It’s truly the most heartbreaking finale and most shocking episode that we’ve ever had in the whole series of the show,” she admitted. “Absolutely nothing will be the same…It’s going to be really, really, really crazy rest of the season. Everything moves so fast moving forward.”

Buckle up, everybody.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on ABC.
