Lionsgate said today that Summit Entertainment’s The Divergent Series: Insurgent will be released in both 3D and 2D when it bows worldwide on March 20, 2015. The first pic in the series was released in 2D and IMAX when it was released this March, grossing $ 151M domestically and $ 289M worldwide. Lionsgate partnered with RealD on the sequel’s 3D.
Shailene Woodley and Theo James return for Insurgent to topline a cast that includes Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoë Kravitz, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q and Mekhi Phifer. The second pic in the franchise follows Tris (Woodley) and Four (James) who are now fugitives on the run searching for allies and answers in the ruins of a futuristic Chicago. They are hunted by Jeanine (Winslet), leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite.
The third and fourth installments in the franchise based on the Veronica Roth bestsellers — Allegiant – Part 1 and Allegiant – Part 2 — are slated for release on March 18, 2016 and March 24, 2017.
Robert Schwentke is directing the pic from a screenplay by Brian Duffield, Akiva Goldsman and Mark Bomback.
