The British actor will join The Danish Girl star Matthias Schoenaerts in the film adaptation of the underwater tragedy, which occurred when a torpedo exploded onboard the K-141 Kursk, the pride of the Russian Navy.
The officers on the nuclear-powered water craft had been running a naval exercise prior to the blast, which caused the ship to sink to the bottom of the Barents Sea, by the Arctic Ocean.
As the crew fought for their lives, Russian government officials refused international aid for five days, despite protests from the sailors’ families.
They finally accepted help from British and Norwegian authorities, but the decision came too late and resulted in the death of 118 Russians.
Thomas Vinterburg has been tapped to direct the movie, which is based on Robert Moore’s book, A Time to Die: The Untold Story of the Kursk Tragedy, reports Variety.com.
Saving Private Ryan screenwriter Robert Rodat will pen the adaptation for Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp production company.
A release date for Kursk has yet to be revealed.
It won’t be Firth’s only real-life movie set at sea. He also features in the upcoming Deep Water, in which he portrays inexperienced British yachtsman Donald Crowhurst, who finds struggling after setting off on a disastrous bid to win the 1968 Golden Globe Race.
Deep Water, directed by James Marsh, also co-stars Rachel Weisz as Crowhurst’s wife and David Thewlis as his press agent.
