The SAG-AFTRA President Ken Howard made the announcement on Monday (20th July) and issued a statement in which he explained the Guild’s decision:

“Carol Burnett is a creative dynamo and a comedic genius. She embodies the generosity and courage that the greatest actors use in creating enduring and memorable characters. From her heartbreakingly hilarious Starlet O’Hara to the adorably inept Eunice and alarmingly funny Miss Hannigan, Carol has delighted and inspired millions of viewers and thousands of comedic actors. She took risks as a performer and through her courage, encouraged fellow actors to try new things and always, always reach for the sky. Her innate love of actors led to the creation of an ensemble cast that made The Carol Burnett Show a masterpiece of variety programming.”

The recipient of numerous Emmy Awards, Golden Globe and a Peabody Award, Burnett is best known for her comedy television roles. She starred in The Carol Burnett Show, which ran on CBS between 1967 and 1978. She is also well known for her role as Miss Hannigan in the 1982 musical, Annie

At the age of 82, Burnett is showing no signs of slowing down and is currently working on three different projects, as THR reports. She is working with CBS on the release of the first five seasons of The Carol Burnett Show. These episodes have never been distributed.

She is also writing a film along with her daughter, Carrie. CBS Films are producing the film, entitled Sunshine in Memphis. She is also working on her fourth book, In the Sandbox, due to be released in 2016.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to an entertainer who best embodies the “finest ideals of the acting profession”. It has been presented annually since 1962 (with the exception of 1964 and 1981).

Burnett is the 52nd recipient of the award. Previous recipients include the likes of legendary entertainers Gregory Peck, Katharine Hepburn, Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor. Last year’s award was presented to Debbie Reynolds.

The 22nd annual Screen Actors Guild Award will be broadcast simultaneously on TNT and TBS on 30th January 2016.
