The past week for Amber Heard and Johnny Depp has been the complete opposite of easy.

But as public scrutiny continues to surround the former couple, a source close to the model is coming forward and providing a glimpse into how Amber is doing amidst the divorce drama.

“This has been incredibly upsetting for Amber but she knows she is doing the right thing,” our source shared with E! News. “It has been very traumatic for her to finally speak out, but she needs to do what she can to protect herself.”

Just days after filing for divorce from Johnny, Amber was granted a domestic violence restraining order against her soon-to-be ex-husband after alleging abuse and showing up to a Los Angeles courtroom visibly bruised on the face.

While Johnny has not directly addressed the accusations of domestic violence and restraining order, his team put out a statement after the divorce was announced making it clear that fans shouldn’t believe everything they read.

“Given the brevity of this marriage and the most recent and tragic loss of his mother, Johnny will not respond to any of the salacious false stories, gossip, misinformation and lies about his personal life,” Depp’s rep told E! News. “Hopefully the dissolution of this short marriage will be resolved quickly.”

Ultimately, Amber alleges that things got heated between herself and Johnny multiple times before filing for divorce.

In court documents obtained by E! News, Amber alleged that, “during the entirety of our relationship, Johnny has been verbally and physically abusive to me. I endured excessive emotional, verbal and physical abuse from Johnny, which has included angry hostile, humiliating and threatening assaults to me whenever I questioned his authority or disagreed with him.”

She also highlighted her birthday party on April 21, 2016 that allegedly got violent. In court documents, Amber alleges that Johnny “was also screaming and threatening me” during a “bad argument.” She goes on to state that “I did not see Johnny again for another month.”

As to why she waited so long to seek safety, a source close to the model believes there was always hope that things could get better.

“She tried to hide what was really happening in the marriage from most of her friends because she wanted to believe that it would get better. That things would change. But ultimately they didn’t and so she had to do what she did to stop it,” our source shared. “What she has done has taken a lot of courage.”
