ACE Eddie Awards: ‘La La Land’ & ‘Arrival’ Top Film

La La Land and Arrival were the big winners tonight at the 67th annual ACE Eddie Awards, taking the respective marquee prizes for Best Edited Feature Comedy and Dramatic. The win for La La Land continues its momentum as it sails into Oscar Night with a record-tying 14 nominations. On the TV side, the top wins went to the Emmy-laden HBO series Game of Thrones and Veep, with NBC’s breakout drama This Is Us continuing its terrific rookie season with an Eddie for Best Edited One-Hour Series – Commercial. “I’m thrilled skinny,” Arrival editor Joe Walker said in accepting his award. “How amazing that a film about unity and tolerance with a strong female lead should do so well.”

The American Cinema Editors’ honors are considered a harbinger of the Best Editing prize at the Academy Awards; 10 of the past 13 Eddie winners for best edited dramatic film have gone on to score the Oscar, including Mad Max: Fury Road last year. Of course, this year’s film to beat next month is the musical La La Land, which was in the comedy field, so it soon could be 10 of the past 14.

Elsewhere, O.J.: Made in America continued its awards-season momentum with a Best Edited Documentary Feature win at the Beverly Hilton tonight, and Zootopia won for Animated Feature against fellow Oscar nominees Moana and Kubo and the Two Strings. The gastro-travelogue Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown continued its Eddie dominance, winning Best Edited Non-Scripted Series for a fourth year in a row.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend star Rachel Bloom hosted the trophy show, which awarded hardware in 10 film and TV categories. J.J. Abrams was presented with the Golden Eddie Award for Filmmaker of the Year. “As editors, you’re f*cked,” he said from the stage. “There’s no magical next step. You are not allowed to have dreams of later. The buck stops with you. It took me years to really appreciate the art of editorial.”

Career Achievement Awards went to Janet Ashikaga, a four-time Emmy winner whose credits include 100-plus episodes of Seinfeld along with The West Wing, Frasier, Sports Night and Medium, and Martin Scorsese’s go-to editor Thelma Schoonmaker, who won Oscars for The Departed, The Aviator and Raging Rull and earned four other noms stretching back to Woodstock.

“We’ve worked together for 37 years,” Scorsese said in presenting Schoonmaker’s award.
“I love the editing the most of the filmmaking process, and a lot of it has to do with spending time with Thelma. Each film becomes a lifetime and a great adventure, so we spent many lifetimes together. I must say, ultimately, it’s about trust — trust in her and her fierceness to fight for the truth of the film.”
