As usual, the annual GLAAD Media Awards was a hilarious, heart-warming and heart-breaking affair. Celebrities came out in droves to defend this discriminated community, to accept recognition for their work to help these communities and to talk about all the positive changes that are happening to aid in the equalization of humanity.
Mariah Carey’s GLAAD speech was everything
This year’s ceremony was hosted by ‘Orange Is The New Black’ star Laverne Cox and featured a whole host of stars in attendance to accept their various awards and make some inspiring speeches. Here are just a few of the top moments at the 27th annual GLAAD event:
1. Mariah Carey’s new alphabet – This iconic singer received the GLAAD Ally Award from her friend Lee Daniels, and she was quick to point out that LGBTQ means a lot more than just lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer. ‘I had to learn a whole new alphabet to introduce and not un-include people. I don’t want to do it wrong. I decided that if I have to memorize it, I might as well elaborate on it’, she explained in her acceptance speech. ‘So we have L: legendary. G: gorgeous. B: beautiful – all of you beautiful people! T: tantalizing, and even Q for quality!’
2. If Robert De Niro was a lesbian – Robert De Niro got the Excellence in Media Award, which was presented to him by his ‘Joy’ co-star Jennifer Lawrence. His response? ‘If I were a lesbian, I’d be all over you’, he quipped. ‘Being a father figure has its limitations.’
3. Jennifer Lawrence does her own thing – The former gag was only in response to J-Law joking that De Niro is gay. ‘GLAAD and Bob have a lot in common. They’re both gay’, she told the audience. ‘Just kidding. I was told by five different people to cut that and I was like, ‘Hell no.”
4. Caitlyn Jenner touches our hearts – On a more serious note, the Jenner matriarch (sorry Kris) gave a heartfelt speech when she, David Sloan and Diane Sawyer were awarded for for Outstanding TV Journalism after the interview she gave coming out to the public about her gender transition. ‘It has been quite a ride for the last year. And there is nothing better in life, than living your life authentically’, she said after revealing just how bad things were before the change: ‘I had been trashed in the tabloids for years. I had paparazzi following me everywhere I went. The life was really horrible.’

5. Connie Britton fights against anti-LGBT laws – The ‘Nashville’ actress addressed the recent House Bill 1840 in Tennessee that allows mental health care to be denied to LGBT patients. She started by defending the majority of Tennessee residents (‘That is not what the people believe there. I know it.’) before going on to explain just how she’s going to help scrap this ridiculous new bill. ‘GLAAD is also working with country music artists, as well as studios and networks, to advance acceptance and put an end to these discriminatory laws that are not only unjust, but un-American’, she said.
