EXCLUSIVE: Married actors Mark Webber and Teresa Palmer make a bold foray into indie filmmaking in the digital era with The Ever After, a mostly self-financed drama the couple co-wrote, star in, and will release online worldwide on Valentine’s Day via direct-to-consumer platform VHX.
Webber, seen recently in Jessabelle and Happy Christmas, and Palmer, known for her roles in I Am Number Four and Warm Bodies, star as Thomas and Ava, a photographer and an actress with a young child and a lovely LA home who must confront their innermost vulnerabilities to save their marriage when trauma strikes. In his third feature behind the camera after 2008’s Explicit Ills and 2012’s The End Of Love, Webber directs the partially crowdfunded drama which premiered last year at the LA Film Festival. Filming took place in LA and Palmer’s native Australia while Palmer was pregnant with the couple’s first child, with a cast that includes Melissa Leo, Rosario Dawson, Phoebe Tonkin, Joshua Leonard, Moby, and Scott Mescudi AKA Kid Cudi. Moby composed the film’s original score with Daniel Ahearn.
The Ever After is going straight to consumer via streaming or HD DRM-free download on February 14 in a digital release the filmmakers say is a deliberate artistic choice. “We are standing alongside other revolutionary artists resisting the urge to go with corporate distribution companies,” said Webber and Palmer, who also produced with Eric Binns. “We are redefining what it means to be independent and giving you the film straight from the artist to your screen.”
Palmer’s upcoming films include Terrence Malick’s Knight Of Cups, John Hillcoat’s Triple Nine, and Warner Bros.’ Point Break remake. She’s repped by WME, Management 360 and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern. Webber, who stars in Matthew Leutwyler’s upcoming sci-fi Uncanny and the skinheads vs. punks thriller Green Room for Blue Ruin director Jeremy Saulnier, is repped by WME and 3 Arts.
