The 28th annual GLAAD Media Awards took place Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton, with Moonlight besting in the outstanding film wide release category and Freeforms’s Shadowhunters and Amazon’s Transparent nabbing the outstanding drama series and outstanding comedy series, respectively.
Writer Tarell Alvin Mccraney accepted the award on behalf of the film and highlighted the underrepresented in his speech. “We win when we give our children, the ones who are going missing in the night, or wondering how much they matter to us, to each other, to the law… give them the courage, the tools and resources to scatter their light across the cinema walls and make the face of heaven so fine. We won for Moonlight today, but how are we winning tomorrow?”
“I play an openly proud bi-sexual warlock and a person of color that’s in a relationship with a recently out gay shadowhunter who hunts demons for a living. I don’t think that this combination has ever existed on TV,” said Harry Shum Jr., who accepted the award with co-star Matthew Daddario. “That just shows the progress of telling these unique stories”
“With the success of shows like this,” said the Transparent crew onstage, “we have the opportunity to tell marginalized stories and let us be seen, heard, and humanized.
Patricia Arquette was honored with the Vanguard Award and gave an emotional speech honoring late sister and LGBTQ champion Alexis Arquette. “She wanted to help move the world forward to a time in the future where every trans kid could live up to their potential… help move the world forward to a time where trans were seen as complete, whole and equal human beings… whatever mark I have made in activism will pale in the light of Alexis’ bravery.”
Hosted by Seeso’s Take My Wife star Cameron Esposito, Empire’s Jussie Smollett lead a special tribute to victims of the Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting that included a powerful performance by Broadway star Cynthia Erivo.
The 2017 GLAAD Media Awards will air on Logo on April 6 at 10 PM ET/PT, after the world broadcast premiere of Strike A Pose. Additional awards will be presented at the GLAAD Media Awards event at the New York Hilton Midtown in New York on Saturday, May 6.
