2015 SAG Award Nominations Snubs and Surprises: No Selma or Unbroken Nods, Birdman Leads

Ansel Elgort and Eva Longoria announced the nominees for the 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Wednesday morning, and as always, there were quite a few surprises and snubs that really got people talking!

Most notably absent from the motion picture category? Selma, a civil rights era film focusing on Martin Luther King, Jr. and fellow activists circa 1965. The Oprah Winfrey-produced movie was snubbed across the board—with no nods in any category, even for David Oyelowo, who seemed a shoe-in for the Outstanding Male Actor in a Leading Role category.

Another apparent SAG snub was the lack of nominations for Unbroken, directed by Angelina Jolie. Neither the film nor Jack O’Connell (who plays the late Louis Zamperini) received any nominations, despite plenty of pre-award season buzz.

As for the surprises? Well, Birdman led the 2015 SAG nominees; it’s up for Outstanding Motion Picture, plus nominations went to Michael Keaton for Outstanding Male Actor in a Leading Role, Edward Norton for Outstanding Male Actor in a Supporting Role and Emma Stone for Outstanding Female Actor in a Supporting Role. Naomi Watts did not receive a nod for Outstanding Female Actor in a Leading Role for her role in Birdman. She wasn’t totally snubbed by the SAGs, though—her St. Vincent performance earned her a nod for Outstanding Female Actor in a Supporting Role.

Other movie nods we didn’t necessarily see coming? Jake Gyllenhaal‘s Outstanding Male Actor in a Leading Role nomination for Nightcrawler wasn’t exactly expected, and some wondered whether Jennifer Aniston‘s performance in Cake would secure her an Outstanding Female Actor in a Leading Role nod (it did!).
