Can you believe it’s been 20 years since Matilda graced our lives?!
Whether you’re willing to accept it or not, today marks the 20th anniversary since we first laid eyes on the gifted Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson) and experienced her journey as a young book worm, who had to maneuver through life with crude parents (Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman) and a terrifying principal, Miss Trunchbull (Pam Ferris).
Luckily, with the help of books, her teacher Miss Honey (Embeth Davidtz) and bestie Lavender (Kiami Davael), Matilda was able to not only live the life she’d always wanted, but teach us some valuable life lessons along the way.
1. Reading is actually a really cool thing to do.
2. The library can be a magical place and an escape if you need it to be.
3. Inspirational teachers, like Miss Honey, are treasured and appreciated.
4. You shouldn’t trust chocolate cake.
5. But let’s be real, you’ll probably want to eat an entire chocolate cake to yourself, and you can do it with the right support system. Just ask Bruce Bogtrotter.
6. Despite what Miss Trunchbull says, wearing pigtails doesn’t make you a pig.
7. Don’t misbehave in school, because you don’t want to deal with The Chokie.
8. Former Olympians will always be very prideful about their respective sport (especially if it’s the shot-put or hammer throw).
9. When someone says things like, “I’m smart, you’re dumb. I’m big, you’re little. I’m right you’re wrong,” the opposite is almost always true.
10. A parrot can be very beneficial in freaking people out.
11. Speaking of pranks, super-gluing someone’s hat to their head or swapping their oil for hair dye is ruthless but hilarious.
12. According to Mrs. Wormwood, you should never wear a hat to a nice dinner.
13. And sometimes dessert before dinner is just meant to be.
14. Don’t be afraid to highlight your strengths, like Matilda did with her math skills.
15. Remember to always dance like nobody’s watching.
16. As the narrator told us from the beginning, “Everyone is born, but not everyone is born the same.”
17. You can become independent at a very young age.
18. Make sure you have a best friend who always has your back.

19. Sometimes you look at relatives and the connection just doesn’t make sense, because the family members are completely different from one another.
20. And sometimes, family isn’t blood, but the people who want the best for you.
