EXCLUSIVE: Ruben Fleischer is attached to direct COPS, a feature adaptation of the famous police reality procedural TV series. The idea is to turn that vibe — best known for its catchy theme song — into an edgy narrative feature with a buddy comedy bent on the order of a Lethal Weapon. Cameron Fay will write the script, and Boies/Schiller Film Group will finance the film. Fleischer and David Bernad will produce through The District along with COPS rights holder Langley Films’ John Langley.
Boies/Schiller, comprised of David Boies and Zach Schiller, last financed the Gavin O’Connor-directed Jane Got A Gun, which starred Natalie Portman. Fleischer, who’s working on the Zombieland sequel and exec producing the NBC sitcom Superstore, is repped by CAA, Management 360, and attorney Warren Dern. Fay, who wrote a sequel to The Three Stooges and the upcoming Taran Killam-starrer Brother Nature, is repped by Paradigm and Kaplan/Perrone.
