Will Smith’s ‘Focus’ Replaces ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ On Top Of US Box Office After $6.4 Million Friday

If you’d been wondering what it would take to knock Fifty Shades Of Grey off the top of the US box office, it turns out the answer was Will Smith. Smith returned to the big screen this weekend in con-man comedy Focus, which managed to steal the No. 1 spot from Fifty Shades which had been dominating theatres since its Valentine’s release’

The comedy, which co-stars Margot Robbie now looks set to take around $ 20 by the end of the weekend, according to the Hollywood Reporter, after pulling in $ 6.4 million on its opening Friday. The film is something of a return to form for Smith who suffered a career blow when After Earth bombed in 2012.

The R-rated romp stars Smith as a con man who introduces his young lover to his art before ending their relationship. Three years later, they couple meet again in Buenos Aires, but things are a little different as this time they’re both trying to scam the same billionaire. The film has so far received mixed reviews form critics with many criticising the plot and Robbie and Smith’s pairing.

After a mega money making run on top Fifty Shades of Grey now has to settle with second place, taking $ 3.5 million on Friday. Colin Firth spy spoof Kingsmen took a little less with $ 3.1 million on its third Friday, with the comedy expected to take $ 11 over the course of the weekend.

In fourth place comes low-budget horror film The Lazarus Effect which debuted with $ 3.8 million Starring Mark Duplass and Olivia Wilde, its projected to take around $ 10million on its opening weekend far surpassing its small $ 3.3million budget.
