So what did you think?
If you’re not familiar with the comic books AMC’s Preacher is based on, you might be a bit stunned. Or even if you are familiar with Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s 1990s comic book series about a preacher who’s possessed by a supernatural being that gives him the power of commanding anyone to do anything he wishes, you might still be stunned, because one good word to describe the premiere is “stunning.”
Preacher tells the tale of Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), a preacher who returns to his home town church and, with the help of a supernatural entity that possesses him, attempts to find God. He has help from his ex-girlfriend and weapons expert (and possibly our new hero) Tulip (Ruth Negga), and a mostly drunk Irish vampire named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), and a truly stunning amount of blood, violence, and just sheer fun.
While the premiere was filled with laughs, both normal and reluctant, due to all the blood, the biggest and most unexpected joke was almost a bit of a throwaway. On its hunt to find a host, the supernatural entity made its way through multiple preachers of multiple religions. Most couldn’t handle it, and died by explosion. Once such sufferer of that fate was Tom Cruise, who, according to a news report, exploded while in front of a congregation.

That’s just the kind of humor you can expect from this no-nonsense/all-nonsense series, which comes from executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (who also gave us This Is the End, which also gave us religious undertones and dead celebrities).
It’s probably not a show for everyone, but if the pilot was at all your jam, then you are in for a truly fun time.
