Sarah J. Maas’ best-selling Throne of Glass book series is headed to television. Hulu is developing Queen of Shadows, an epic fantasy adventure TV series based on the books, from the Mark Gordon Company, which will serve as a studio on the project. Kira Snyder (The 100) will write the adaptation, with Anna Foerster (Underworld: Blood Wars) set to direct the potential pilot episode.
Queen of Shadows follows Celaena Sardothien, a complicated female assassin with a mysterious past who only wants her freedom. Now beholden to an increasingly tyrannous king, Celaena will become a reluctant hero against the multitudes of forces that threaten to destroy her world. Along the way she will make friends, enemies, and lovers, and be wildly underestimated by all of them.
The Mark Gordon Co’s Mark Gordon and Nick Pepper will executive produce with Snyder and Foerster.
Published by Bloomsbury Children’s Books, the six-book Throne of Glass series is written by bestselling author Maas. Five of the novels have been published so far, Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight, Heir of Fire, Queen of Shadows, with No.5, Empire of Storms, released yesterday.
Maas, who wrote the first incarnation of the series when she was 16, is repped by CAA and Tamar Rydzinski of the Laura Dail Literary Agency.
Snyder, whose writing credits also include Hulu’s upcoming series The Handmaid’s Tale and movie Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, is repped by Gersh, Echo Lake Entertainment, and attorney Tara Senior.
Foerster, whose TV directing credits include CBS’ Madam Secretary, is repped by WME and Loeb & Loeb.
This marks the first sale at Hulu for the Mark Gordon Co. whose Jen Chambers and Bibby Dunn will oversee the project.
The Mark Gordon Co.’s series portfolio include Ray Donovan (Showtime), Grey’s Anatomy (ABC), Criminal Minds and spin-off Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders (CBS), and Quantico (ABC). As an independent, backed by eOne, the company serves as the lead studio on the upcoming ABC series Designated Survivor, starring Kiefer Sutherland, and Conviction, starring Hayley Atwell. Mark Gordon is repped by CAA.
