Radiohead lead singer Thom Yorke surprised guests at a small Oxford garden party this weekend by performing a short set of songs.
A Reddit user posted the news on Sunday afternoon (June 12th), after apparently receiving a text from his father reading: “in Oxford at [a] garden party with Suzie’s neighbours, about to hear entertainment from neighbour Tom York of Radiohead!”
Later on, a video shot by another attendee at the party surfaced, showing the frontman sat with just an acoustic guitar. It’s said that Yorke performed for around 30 minutes, playing ‘Desert Island Disk’, ‘No Surprises’, ‘Street Spirit (Fade Out)’, ‘Reckoner’ and ‘I Might Be Wrong’.
The garden party, one assumes, was being held in honour of the Queen’s 90th birthday – so it’s somewhat incongruous to see such a consistently anti-establishment figure as Yorke performing.

“Thom Yorke played an Oxford Garden Party for the Queens 90th. Those old snobs have no clue how lucky they are,” the same attendee at the party wrote having posted a picture on Twitter.
With tickets for the band’s three recent intimate gigs at London’s Roundhouse selling out in under an hour earlier this year, and ticket touts moving them on for several thousands of pounds online, it must be somewhat galling for those who missed out to see Yorke playing for free in front of people who don’t know how to spell his name.
Radiohead released their latest album, A Moon Shaped Pool, on May 8th after many months of speculation about new material. Yorke and his band are due to play a number of significantly bigger gigs than this weekend’s – they’ll be at New York’s Madison Square Garden on July 26th, then at Los Angeles and Mexico City.
