The guitarist and singer, who formed The Weavers with PETE SEEGER, Lee Hays, and Ronnie Gilbert in 1948, passed away at his home in Connecticut on Thursday (01Sep16), according to his son.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, he mastered the guitar while serving in the U.S. Coast Guard.
After leaving the influential folk band, Hellerman became a composer, arranger and songwriter.
Among his most noted recordings were Goodnight Irene with The Weavers, while he also produced Arlo Guthrie’s hit album Alice’s Restaurant.
