He may be a member of one of the most successful British boy bands of recent years, but Nathan Sykes may have just stirred up a hornets’ nest by suggesting that One Direction are ready to split up.
In an interview with The Mirror, Sykes reckoned that the band will part ways in the not too distant future because the individual members might be ready to engage with solo projects. “I think their last album sounded brilliant,” he stated up front. Rule number one of pop music interviews – don’t annoy 1D fans!
Nathan Sykes is pursuing a solo career while The Wanted are on hiatus
“But when you’re a percentage of a group, you’ve also just got to give yourself some time where you can be 100% for yourself,” he continued. “You’ve got to do the stuff that you always wanted to do and the stuff that you always wanted to do and have fun with it, rather than be 20% of a boyband.”

One Direction, which consists of Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Liam Payne, released their last studio album Four in November of last year. Sykes had a similar experience in an identically composed five-piece boy band, alongside Max George, Tom Parker, Siva Kaneswaran and Jay McGuinness in The Wanted, and has recently become a drinking buddy of Harry Styles’ and might know something we don’t.
Since The Wanted went on hiatus about a year ago, Sykes has been focussed on a solo career, recently unveiling a new single ‘More Than You’ll Ever Know’ from an as-yet-untitled album that he promises to release by the end of 2015.
Sadly for fans of the band, Sykes dismissed any possibility of doing shows with The Wanted in the immediate future. “I’m sure they’ll do some more, but I’m personally very focused on this at the moment so it won’t be for me.”
