From the mists of ancient times – cinematically speaking of course – the first trailer for Universal’s reboot of The Mummy has dropped like a bag of hammers taped to explosives owned by an archaeologist, and you can watch it here now.
First take? I have no idea if looks like a proper Mummy film, but it definitely looks like a proper action film. And who better to lead it than a contender for the greatest living action star? That’s Tom Cruise of course, in full-on Mission Impossible mode here, first seen in an honestly awesome scene aboard a crashing airplane (I can’t wait to learn how much of that isn’t just CGI), during which he appears to die, is resurrected in a morgue, and then, while a somber Russell Crowe explains how dire the situation is, runs, and runs, through what looks like a very endangered London.
The tagline says it all: “Welcome to the new world of Gods and Monsters”. The Mummy is of course the first installment of what the studio intends as a fully relaunched Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe. Directed by Alex Kurtzman and written by Jon Spaihts, The Mummy stars Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis, Sofia Boutella, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance and Russell Crowe
