As if to illustrate perfectly the mega-stardom that Taylor Swift has enjoyed over the last 12 months, her smash hit album 1989 has become just the fifth record in history to spend an entire year inside the U.S. Top Ten.
Released on October 27th 2014, Swift’s fifth full-length album rocketed straight to Number 1 on its first week of release, selling an incredible 1.29 million copies in the process. Since then, it has enjoyed huge longevity and popularity, and becomes one of a very select few records to spend 52 consecutive weeks in the highest echelons of the Billboard Top 200.
Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ is just the fifth album in history to spend 52 consecutive weeks inside the U.S. Top Ten
Only Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, Bruce Springsteen’s Born In The U.S.A., Celine Dion’s Falling Into You and Adele’s 21 have managed the same accomplishment in the 52 years that the Billboard charts first started tracking both mono and stereo LP sales, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
1989 has now sold over 5.4 million copies to date, but it has quite a long way to go before it challenges Springsteen’s record of 84 weeks! That record was in the Top Ten from June 1984 to January 1986.

The statistic is just one of many impressive achievements that Swift has managed since 1989’s release one year ago. She became the first artist to enjoy million-selling debut weeks for three albums in a row, after 2012’s Red and 2010’s Speak Now did the same. It’s also spawned five huge hit singles, three of which have been Number 1 – ‘Shake It Off’, ‘Blank Space’ and ‘Bad Blood’.
Meanwhile, Swift’s seemingly endless, star-studded 1989 World Tour rumbles on with the inexorable force of a war machine. On Tuesday night’s gig in Miami, Florida (Ocotber 27th), to celebrate the one-year anniversary itself, the 25 year old brought out a host of local guest stars to help her perform, including Ricky Martin, Pitbull and Dwayne Wade.
