Happy 18th birthday, Lorde!
Yes, it’s hard to believe that the New Zealand wunderkind is only now an adult. Just ask BFF Taylor Swift!
On Friday, the 24-year-old “Shake It Off” singer Instagrammed a celebratory selfie with the B-Day girl, who is talented (and apparently wise) well beyond her years. “It’s Ella’s 18th birthday technically,” wrote Taylor, referring to Lorde by her real first name, “but we all know she’s really 300 and knows all the secrets of the universe. #ELLAflickebeat”

Lorde is a Grammy-winning old soul! Because she’s achieved so much at such a young age, some people have have claimed the “Yellow Flicker Beat” singer is actually older than she lets on.
First of, all, Lorde-age-truthers, get a new hobby. Secondly, website The Hairpin put the age rumors to rest earlier this year by posting a copy of her New Zealand birth certificate (if you would like, you can view it here).
Lorde finds the fascination about her age rather amusing, it seems. In a Vanity Fair interview last year, she deadpanned, “Hi, I’m Ella and I’m actually 45.”

Best of all, perhaps, was her response to South Park‘s parody of her. (During a recent episode, viewers discovered—shock—that Lorde was actually Randy Marsh, a 45-year-old male geologist.) Lorde got the last laugh on that one.
“That was really funny! I got off really easy,” Lorde said laughingly in an interview with New Zealand’s TV3. “I was thinking, ‘Yeah he has a moustache… I mean I have a moustache, but is it that prominent?’ But it was someone’s dad pretending to be me. We actually, in my hotel room, went ‘Ya ya ya ya ya I’m Lorde! Ya ya ya!’ for like an hour, because that’s why they do on the episode, so…”
Yep, she went ahead and sang the “Ya Ya Ya” song.
These stars are the same age?!
