Katey Sagal has been cast opposite Jermaine Fowler and Judd Hirsch in CBS’ multi-camera comedy pilot Superior Donuts. After the upfronts, CBS ordered a new pilot for the project for midseason consideration, recasting several parts. While the role that Sagal will play is regular, she was cast as a guest star as she is in second position to another CBS comedy pilot, the single-camera Furst Born. That project, from ABC Studios and CBS TV Studios, extended the cast options in June as CBS kept it in consideration for a midseason series order. Sagal has a series regular option on Superior Donuts, from CBS TV Studios, so she is expected to continue on the pilot that goes to series.
Written and executive produced by Neil Goldman & Garrett Donovan and Bob Daily based on the play by Tracy Letts, Superior Donuts follows the relationship between the owner of a donut shop, Arthur (Hirsch), his new young employee (Fowler) and their patrons in a gentrifying neighborhood of Chicago.
Sagal will play Randy, a practical street cop for whom Superior Donuts is part of her beat. She’s been on the force a long time and nothing fazes her.
The role was played in the original pilot by Megyn Price. The executives of CBS and CBS TV Studios cast a wide net for the part in the second go-around, considering a number actresses of different ages and ethnicities during an extensive, months-long search.
In addition to Fowler and Hirsch, the cast of Superior Donuts includes Maz Jobrani, David Koechner and Rell Battle.
Daily, Goldman and Donovan, who serve as showrunners, executive produce alongside Fowler, Mark Teitelbaum, John R. Montgomery and 3 Arts’ Michael Rotenberg and Josh Lieberman for CBS TV Studios.
This marks a return to half-hours for Married With Children and 8 Simple Rulesalumna Sagal after back-to-back dark turns on the FX drama series Sons Of Anarchy and The Bastard Executioner. She’s repped by WME and B&B Management.
