‘Supergirl’ finally premiered on CBS last night (October 26th 2015) and with it we were introduced to the main cast; reviving characters from the original DC comics as well as unveiling new additions to the ever growing superhero world. We learn that Supergirl is the cousin of Superman, similarly now working for the media, who also now has an adopted family and a desire to bring her powers to the surface.
‘Supergirl? Not… Superwoman?’
Of course, last night’s Pilot also saw the introduction of some new villains, namely Vartox who’s known in the comics as the nemesis of both Superman and Power Girl (a later incarnation of Supergirl), and Astra; the twin sister of Kara’s mother Alura who’s determined to seek revenge on the latter, kill Kara and rule the world. So who else is about to have a massive impact on Kara’s life?
Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist): The everyday alter-ego of Kara Zor-El herself is in quite the position to juggle both a full-time job and her heroic ventures. Aged 24, she lives in National City and works as a personal assistant to Cat Grant, owner of the media company CatCo. The character was sent down to Earth as a young girl during the destruction of her home planet Krypton and she hasn’t seen her parents since. Initially, she’s only aware of one biological member of her family within communication distance; that of her cousin Superman.

Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart): A powerful media mogul, Grant runs CatCo (as opposed to working as a gossip columnist for the Daily Planet as portrayed in the comics). Bossy, egocentric (essentially Miranda Priestly in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’) and glamorous, she coins the name ‘Supergirl’ after the news hits of a young girl rescuing a plane, much to Kara’s dismay.

Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh): A creation for the TV series, Alex is the adoptive sister of Kara and initially the only other person Kara is aware of who knows about her special powers. She is in the plane that Kara rescues when she first exposes herself, and frankly isn’t too happy about her decision to become a superheroine. After accepting that her sister needs to be the world’s saviour, she introduces her to her mysterious boss at a secret organisation called the Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO).

Hank Henshaw (David Harewood): The head of the DEO and a former member of the CIA. While Henshaw understands that Kara is essential in their mission to protect the world from supernatural forces, he seriously mistrusts all aliens and only accepts her help with reluctance. We don’t want to give too much away, but this is the moment when comic book fans start to feel a little uneasy as Henshaw doesn’t exactly have the best reputation in the Superman storyline. You best keep an eye on this one.

James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks): Also known as Jimmy Olsen, he was a photographer for the Daily Planet and is deeply respected and revered by Kara when he shows up at her work place as the new CatCo Art Director. He also happens to be a close friend of Superman and becomes something of a messenger between him and Kara, even passing on the cape that Superman was wrapped in as a baby.

Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan): Kara’s colleague who happens to be shamelessly crushing on Kara, despite her frequent rejections. He’s the first person Kara tells about her abilities and he subsequently helps transform her in Supergirl using both his technical and, apparently, fashion knowledge. The downside is, he happens to share his name with DC supervillain Toyman – this may be another one Kara needs to watch.
