The show, entitled nerds, tells the story about the rivalry and competition between Apple boss Jobs and Microsoft co-founder Gates, and was slated to open at the Longacre Theatre, New York, on 1 April (16). But now it is unclear whether the show will ever be on the Great White Way.
“On behalf of my fellow producers and investors, it is with great disappointment that we will be postponing the Broadway opening of nerds due to the loss of a major investor,” producer Carl Levin said in a statement on Tuesday (08Mar16). “We are grateful to the one-of-a-kind creative team and cast of this incredibly funny and heartwarming musical that audiences have so enthusiastically adored thus far and we look forward to nerds taking the country by storm.”
With a book and lyrics by three-time Emmy nominees Jordan Allen-Dutton and Erik Weiner, nerds is said to showcase “the most progressive technology seen on Broadway,” including onstage holograms, projection mapping, and in-show app integration for selecting the production’s ending.
The production had its world premiere in Pennsylvania by the Philadelphia Theatre Company in 2007, when it received Barrymore Awards for Outstanding Original Music and Outstanding New Play.
Rehearsals for the Broadway production began last month (Feb16), and the show’s cast was only recently finalised in preparation for its premiere in April (16). It was set to star The Book of Mormon’s Rory O’Malley and Memphis actor Bryan Fenkart as Gates and Jobs, respectively.
There is still hope for nerds – producers are still working on a national tour for the show, according to BroadwayWorld.com.
