Steve Carell joined Ellen DeGeneres on Monday, and in light of the upcoming holiday, he couldn’t help but dish on some of his, er, unexpected Christmas traditions.
“We put lights [up]. We fill the toilets with mulled wine,” he began with a total straight face as the crowd erupted in laughter. “Nancy makes a frankencensen mer-loaf that is delicious.”
But in all seriousness, he and his family—his wife, Nancy, and his two children, Elisabeth and John—do have a pretty adorable tradition.

“I appreciate when people go nuts. I don’t go nuts, but we actually, my wife, Nancy and our kids, get into the car once around Christmas time and we get a big box of donuts and hot chocolate, and we drive around looking at Christmas lights in our neighborhood…It’s pretty wonderful.”
Meanwhile, with the holidays and the release of his latest film, The Big Short, it’s been a busy time of year for Carell.
He dished on the recently released flick, “It’s about the housing bubble—the mortgage bubble in 2008. A handful of guys that essentially shorted the market. They bet against the economy and their success was essentially the economy failing and the banks failing.”
With a stellar cast featuring Brad Pitt, Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling, it’s been a highly-anticipated release, and Carell says it definitely lives up to it.
“It sounds super, super dry, and it’s based on the Michael Lewis book,” he explains. “[But] Adam McKay, who directed Anchorman, directed it, and it’s funny and it’s intriguing.”
Meanwhile, DeGeneres decided to put Carell’s Christmas spirit to work, joining him in a competition of gingerbread house making. The duo had 60 seconds to make the best house possible, and needless to say, things got a little messy. Check it out in the video below!
