The Force Awakens, starring Harrison Ford, is on course to become the highest-grossing movie of all time, and it added to its cash haul by taking a further $ 15.5 million (£10.3 million) at British cinemas over the weekend (01-03Jan16).
It easily overshadowed its nearest rival, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg’s comedy Daddy’s Home, which rose one place to second with box office receipts of $ 4.3 million (£2.9 million).
Jennifer Lawrence’s new movie Joy got a disappointing reception on its opening weekend, netting just $ 2.3 million (£1.5 million) and limping home in third place, and the top five was rounded out by The Danish Girl, with $ 2.1 million (£1.4 million), and Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie, with $ 1.9 million (£1.3 million).
