Shannen Doherty is battling breast cancer. 44-year-old Doherty confirmed the news on Wednesday (19th August) in a statement. Doherty confirmed she was diagnosed in March 2015 and that she is currently undergoing treatment. She also revealed that she is determined to “stay very positive” about her life.

“Yes, I have breast cancer, and I am currently undergoing treatment,” Doherty said in the statement to People.
“I am continuing to eat right, exercise and stay very positive about my life. I am thankful to my family, friends and doctors for their support and, of course, my fans who have stood by me.”
Doherty was forced to issue the statement after TMZ published legal documents which directly related to her illness. The documents concern a legal suit Doherty has filed against her business manager. In the suit, Doherty alleges her business manager failed to pay her insurance premiums, meaning her medical insurance lapsed and she was unable to receive medical care.
Doherty’s suit states the cancer spread during 2014, the time in which she was uninsured. The suit alleges Doherty’s condition could have been treated at an earlier stage, had she been able to access medical care. As the suit reads, had she been able to visit her doctor, “the cancer could potentially have been stopped, thus obviating the need for future treatment [Doherty] will likely have to suffer through now.”
The 44-year-old is best known for her roles in Beverly Hills, 90210 as Brenda Walsh and as Prue Halliwell in Charmed. Since her departure from Charmed in 2001, Doherty has appeared in such series as North Shore and she reprised her role as Brenda in the reboot series of 90210 in 2008 and 2009. She is set to appear in the upcoming biopic of Charles Bukowski, directed by James Franco.
