ABC has given a script commitment plus penalty to a single-camera comedy from The Comedians co-creator/executive producer Ben Wexler and Seth Gordon & Mary Rohlich’s Exhibit A. Sony TV, where Exhibit A has a deal, is the studio.
Written by Wexler, the untitled project centers on a recently-widowed 60-something guy who teams up with an entrepreneurial 20-something girl to “monetize” his biggest asset — the single-family brownstone he used to share with his wife — renting out the bedrooms to an eclectic group of housemates. The “sharing economy” just hit home.
Wexler spent last year in an overall deal at 20th Century Fox TV where he served as executive producer/showrunner on the studio’s freshman comedy The Grinder. He recently wrote and directed a video for Funny or Die encouraging millennials to vote, which starred Rob Huebel, Betsy Brandt and Jennette McCurdy.
Wexler co-created, executive produced and served as showrunner on the FX series The Comedians starring Billy Crystal and Josh Gad. He previously co-executive produced NBC/Sony TV’s The Michael J. Fox Show and also worked on such series as Sony TV’s Community and The King of Queens and 20th TV’s Arrested Development. Wexler is repped by WME and Felker Toczek.
Exhibit A has new series Atypical at Netflix starring Jennifer Jason Leigh. In development, the company also has comedy Manhood at Fox, with writers David Monahan & Danielle Hoover and Happy Madison, and drama Toy Wars at Amazon with Josh Gad starring and co-writing. Gordon is repped by WME and Sloane Offer.
