The divisive 2016 presidential election took a decidedly personal turn tonight among Fox News personnel, as Sean Hannity took to Twitter to call out his Fox colleague Megyn Kelly for being critical of Donald Trump and accusing her of supporting Hillary Clinton.
Hannity was set off by reports that Kelly had criticized Trump for not sitting down for an interview with her. “Donald Trump, with all due respect to my friend at 10:00, will go on Hannity and pretty much only Hannity,” she said, “and will not venture out to the unsafe spaces these days, which doesn’t exactly expand the tent.”
Hannity then replied, tweeting a link to a Mediaite article about the comments, saying that it is Clinton that Kelly should be angry with, and accusing her of being in the tank for Democratic candidate.
Notably, Kelly was also critical of Clinton at the same time she weighed in on Trump, slamming her for doing interviews with Entertainment outlets.
Hannity doubled down on his criticism of Kelly soon after when one of his Twitter followers admonished him for not standing by his colleague, implying that Kelly hasn’t done the same for him.
Hannity might have been making a veiled reference to last week’s first presidential debate, when Kelly, part of Fox News’ panel of commentators, appeared to insult him. “We’ve got Trump speaking to our own Sean Hannity” she said immediately after the debate ended. “We’ll see whether he speaks to the journalists in this room after that interview.”
Kelly has been a consistent critic of Donald Trump and last year was involved in a protracted feud with the GOP candidate after she asked him, during the August 6, 2015 Republican primary debate, about sexist comments he’s made, and questioned whether he has temperament to be President. Trump became a vocal critic of Kelly, subsequently refusing to attend a debate she moderated in September, and the two continued to spar throughout the Republican primary cycle. She has so far not responded to Hannity’s tweets.
