Fellow Republicans might be urging Donald Trump to drop out of the Presidential race, but Robert De Niro went one further saying, in a scathing video message created by Anonymous Content and released online late last night, that wants to punch the GOP candidate in the face. Metaphorically, we assume, but all the same it’s yet another notch on the humiliation belt for what has become, inarguably, the worst week ever for the 2016 GOP presidential campaign.
De Niro added his voice to the chorus of Donald Trump’s critics on the same day a devastating blow was dealt to the Trump campaign by the release of the now-infamous audio that has led several prominent fellow-republicans to denounce him. Pulling absolutely no punches, the multiple Oscar-winner laid into Trump, calling him “so blatantly stupid,” “a punk”, and “a dog” “a bullshit artist” and more.
He “thinks he’s gaming society, doesn’t pay his taxes, he’s an idiot, Colin Powell said it best, he’s a national disaster, he’s an embarrassment to this country. It makes me so angry that this country has gotten to this point that this fool, this bozo, has wound up where he has,” said De Niro.
But what really set De Niro off seems to be Trump’s frequently documented use of, we’ll call it confrontational language, when discussing his opponents and critics. “He talks about how he’d like to punch people in the face?” said De Niro, referring to a statement Trump made at a rally in February about what he’d like to do to a protestor. “Well, I’d like to punch him in the face.”
The video ends with De Niro urging viewers “if you care about your future, vote for it” without specifically endorsing Trump’s main rival, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
As for Trump, despite the urgings of a growing number of Republicans, he has decidedly refused to drop out of the race, instead vowing in a video message last night to keep fighting. While the video was promoted as an apology for the comments he made about women in 2005, recorded by a hot mic while Trump was talking to then-Access Hollywood host Billy Bush, Trump actually spent most of it attempting to redirect the conversation to the Clintons. Notably, Trump brought up old allegations about Bill Clinton’s treatment of women, accused Hillary Clinton of abetting the cover up of these alleged crimes and of criminal intimidation, and vowed to make the charges a centerpiece of his campaign moving forward.
We live, in other words, in interesting times.
