Rita Ora Suing Jay Z’s Record Label Roc Nation To Free Herself From Contract

Rita Ora has launched a lawsuit seeking a split from Jay Z’s record label Roc Nation. The singer, who hasn’t released an album in three years, is arguing that she’s been effectively “orphaned” by the label.

Claiming that label has become inattentive to her despite signing her for a five-album deal back in 2008, the 25 year old singer is seeking release from her contract with Roc Nation, basing her complaint on the violation of a Californian legal code which states that entertainment professionals cannot be contractually obliged to perform services more than seven years after a deal is concluded.

Papers have been filed at L.A.’s Superior Court on Thursday (December 17th), which argue that Roc Nation’s change in direction over the last three years to concentrate on streaming service Tidal and a ranges of sportswear have effectively left her out in the cold and forgotten about, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“As Roc Nation’s interests diversified, there were fewer resources available and the company suffered a revolving door of executives,” the complaint states. “Rita’s remaining supporters at the label left or moved on to other activities, to the point where she no longer had a relationship with anyone at the company.”

“She’s recorded at least three albums’ worth of material,” a source said to the Daily Mirror, adding that an album had been due in summer 2014 but was postponed when her ex-boyfriend Calvin Harris pulled all his material, and that two other plans for a release had been pushed back for no good reason.

“Then she was going to release to coincide with her stint on ‘The Voice’, but the plans were shelved… this year, she had been due to release in September and in November, which would have coincided with ‘The X Factor’.”

“That didn’t happen. She managed to collaborate with Sigma as she appears as a featured artist – so the project wasn’t funded by her label. She’s angry that she’s only released one album in seven years, in what was up to a five-album deal. She wants freedom from them.”

Roc Nation has not responded to the claims at the time of writing.
